Da appassionata di musica mi sono avvicinata a questo libro su una delle band più esplosive della scena punk britannica. Ma per i Crass la musica è solo l’inizio: un veicolo attraverso cui far circolare le loro idee. Anarchici, eversivi, iconoclasti per vocazione, battaglieri e arrabbiati, i Crass sono un collettivo politico e musicale attivo tra il ’77 e l’84. Dalla loro base, una comunità pacifista/anarchica a Dial House a una cinquantina di chilometri da Londra, hanno incendiato la società e il mondo dello spettacolo con l’organizzazione di concerti, festival, distribuzione di volantini che erano autentici atti contro il sistema, arrivando ad attirare l’attenzione dei servizi segreti americani e un’indagine formale da parte del Parlamento britannico.
Il libro, uscito l’Agenzia X di Marco Philopat e firmato DIY (acronimo di quel “Do It Yourself” che proprio tramite i Crass si è imposto nella scena punk dell’epoca), contiene i migliori saggi che sono stati scritti sul collettivo e i racconti dalla voce dei protagonisti, tra cui spiccano gli interventi di Penny Rimbaud, batterista e compositore della band. Devastante il testo “L’ultimo degli hippies” sulla morte di Wally Hope, incarcerato e rinchiuso in un centro per malati mentali perché trovato in possesso di una piccola quantità di droga. 
Completano l’opera la lucidissima prefazione di Marco Philopat e una ricca appendice con copertine, grafiche dei flyer e la traduzione di alcune delle canzoni più significative come Reality asylum, Punk is dead o Banned from the Roxy. È una lettura autentica, appassionante, una vibrante testimonianza su un’epoca e su un pensiero che ha lasciato un solco profondo nel concetto di controcultura. Assolutamente imperdibile.
Da recuperare anche l’edizione rimasterizzata del primo album dei Crass, The feeding of the 5000, acquistabile nel sito della Southern records, a testimonianza che il Punk può ancora essere la risposta ad anni di schifo, una maniera per dire no, quando avevamo sempre detto sì.
